Bernie Arnason

Managing Partner

Bernie brings over 20 years of telecom experience to Pivot, where he provides strategic direction and leadership. Bernie follows the telecom industry closely and conducts industry research and analysis, provides strategic consulting for clients, and cultivates insightful telecom mindshare. Bernie is also the editor-in-chief of Telecompetitor, our leading telecom industry blog. Prior to Pivot, Bernie spent seven years with the NTCA as the vice president of business development. Prior to his work with NTCA, Bernie worked for Bell Atlantic (now Verizon) in network operations. Bernie holds a M.S. in Telecommunications from the Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in Economics from the University of the District of Columbia.


Dave Nieuwstraten


Dave has over 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. Dave is also the founder and president of our sister company, Pivot Group, a leading marketing and creative services agency for broadband service providers. Prior to Pivot, Dave held senior consulting positions with two firms focused on small and rural telecommunications companies. He was the senior marketing consultant for GVNW Consulting, where he worked for over five years. Prior to that, he was the director of marketing services for Cathey, Hutton & Associates (now CHR Solutions) where he oversaw the western region and 11 employees in the marketing/research division. Dave is a frequent writer and speaker on marketing-related topics including strategy, research, product development, advertising, and pricing/bundling. Dave holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing, San Diego State University, and has completed the AMA School of Marketing Research, University of Notre Dame.


Mark Fordice


Mark co-directs Pivot’s research division and also oversees web and technical development projects. Mark has provided product and project management services to both small and large companies for over fifteen years. As a senior product manager, Mark planned and developed new data product lines for a cartography division of Boeing while directing a team located around the world. At Boeing, he doubled a product’s revenues in three years, in part through the effective use of research. Previous to Boeing, Mark headed up software development on variety of web and CD projects at ImageBuilder. He also served as a technical marketer at Intel where he researched new Internet technologies for integration into new products. Mark holds a bachelor of science in Computer Science from Biola University.


Joan Engrebretson

Executive Editor

Joan Engebretson is Executive Editor of Telecompetitor. Joan has been writing about telecommunications since 1992. She has been editor-in-chief of two telecom industry publications—Telephony Magazine and America’s Network Magazine.

Under Engebretson’s leadership, America’s Network won several awards from the American Society of Business Publication Editors, including a 2001 national gold award for her commentary. In 2009, she won best on-line column in min’s Editorial and Design Awards.

Engebretson has a BA in journalism and an MBA from the University of Michigan.


Andrew Burger


Andrew is a Contributing Editor to Telecompetitor. Having worked in the wholesale debt, money and derivatives markets for a major Japanese bank and later as a business and technology reporter, Andrew now earns his living teaching English overseas and freelance reporting. He's lived and worked on every continent barring Antarctica and has a BA (Geology, Univ. of Colorado, Boulder), and an MBA (Finance, Pace University, NY).


Tocia Johnson

Program Manager

Tocia joined Pivot eight years ago as the project manager. She coordinates various engagements for Pivot’s clients that includes webinar productions, digital media campaigns and events. Prior to joining Pivot, Tocia worked with NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association as the Program Supervisor. Tocia enjoys organizing various activities (the event planner in her) and giving time to her local community and schools. During her spare time, she serves as a Girl Scout Leader to “Senior Level” scouts.


Jordan Barnes

Web Developer & Designer

Jordan Barnes is an experienced web developer and designer with a speciality in HTML, CSS, & PHP and creating web banners. He has over 5 years of professional experience in front-end and back-end development. At Pivot Media, his responsibilities include rich content design, creating landing pages and HTML email. For the last 2 1/2 years, Jordan has brought exceptional designs and has completed numerous client deliverables. One of his most significant accomplishments has been redesigning and migrating the Pivot website and marketing materials to a more dynamic and responsive design.


Annie Lidstrom


Annie is a journalist with over 20 years of writing experience in the telecom and broadband sectors. Annie develops content marketing assets for Pivot Media clients and is a contributing blogger to our blog network. In addition to a career of writing for telecom trade publications, Annie also spent time at Telcordia as their Media Relations Manager.
